Jermaine Pennant will be able to play when he is released

The 22-year-old, from Barnet, north London, who is on loan at Birmingham City, was jailed on 1 March.

The Birmingham club have been told he will be eligible for release from next week, but there are no guarantees.

He would have to wear a tag for two weeks after being released, but he would be able to play in matches.

The footballer was arrested after crashing into a lamppost in Aylesbury, Bucks, on 23 January.

He admitted a drink-driving charge, driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

Birmingham say they would ensure that the player adheres to any conditions or curfews that are put in place during the two weeks.

The tagging device will also not stop him training.
