Pensioner saved from flat blaze
A Birmingham pensioner is lucky to be alive after she lost consciousness in a diabetic attack and a blaze broke out in her flat, firefighters said.

The woman passed out at her home in Dormie Close in Kings Norton while she was cooking food in the kitchen.

The fire triggered a smoke alarm which activated a call to the emergency services.

She was taken to Selly Oak Hospital in the city following the incident on Wednesday night.

Bob Deeks from West Midlands Fire Service said: "The foodstuffs on the cooker and some of the interior decor had set on fire, so there was quite heavy smoke-logging to the flat.

"The crews entered with breathing apparatus, rescued the lady, and got her outside the building and gave her first aid."
