Bishop Sentamu's visit is in support of aid workers

The Right Reverend John Sentamu will fly out to the country on Tuesday for a week.

He expressed his support for aid agencies and the work they have carried out in the country.

His trip is being organised by Christian Aid, who have been working in Afghanistan since 1984.

Bishop Sentamu said faith was often misrepresented and blamed as a cause of "harmful division".

"The work of agencies such as Christian Aid shows that faith can be a force for good," he said.

"People of faith are not the cause of problems, but rather they are the solution."

He added: "This can be seen in the work of Christians in the UK and Ireland supporting Muslim communities in Afghanistan and Muslim staff working for Christian Aid in Afghanistan."

Bishop Sentamu said he would be exposing poverty and supporting the work of the aid agencies in its eradication during his trip.

"We all need to be prophets in challenging what works against the interests of the poor."
