Tests into water systems are continuing
No further cases have been reported in the outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Redditch, which has claimed a life, health authorities say.

A 62-year-old woman, Joy Bellingham, died on 8 September and two other people are in hospital.

A woman in her 60s is critical but stable in the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch, while a male patient in his 50s is said to be improving.

The source of the outbreak is still being investigated.

'Cleanse water systems'

By Saturday evening council officers had identified and inspected 130 potential sources across the borough, a statement said.

Further inspections will continue this week. Samples will be sent to the Health Protection Agency laboratories in London and Birmingham for testing.

All local businesses have been strongly advised to cleanse their water systems.

It might mean that we never do identify the source of the outbreak
Sue Hanley, Redditch Borough Council director of environment

Sue Hanley, director of environment and planning at Redditch Borough Council said: "All local businesses and companies in the Redditch area are asked not to delay and get on and clean and disinfect their wet cooling systems.

"This will, in most cases, effectively kill off any harmful bacteria that might be present. However the result of this might mean that we never do identify the source of the outbreak.

"It is a small price to pay in the circumstances; our number one priority is to stop this disease from spreading and to protect the public's health."
