Lee Hughes, pictured outside court, was sacked by Albion

The ex-West Bromwich Albion, Coventry and Kidderminster striker was jailed in August after being involved in a crash in which a father of four was killed.

Hughes had 28 days to appeal and Coventry Crown Court now says it has got relevant papers from his solicitor.

He is appealing against the sentence but not the conviction.

Hughes, 28, was convicted of causing the death of Douglas Graham, 56, by dangerous driving and fleeing the scene of the accident near his home in Meriden last November.

Coventry Crown Court heard he had gone to a post-match drinking session before his �100,000 Mercedes sports car smashed into a Renault Scenic.

Albion terminated his contract following the conviction.
