Alps search for missing soldier
A search has been mounted for an officer cadet from Shropshire who has gone missing while on a training exercise in the French Alps.

The cadet, who comes from Acton Burnell, near Shrewsbury, but has not been named, was among a group training at Chamonix in the French Alps.

The Ministry of Defence says the cadet went missing overnight on Saturday. He was not mountaineering at the time.

His colleagues are helping the gendarmerie in a detailed search.

Local search parties and a helicopter have been brought in to aid the hunt for the cadet, who is 25 years of age.

The exercise is one of 30 of its kind currently taking place in 16 countries across the world, involving cadet officers from Sandhurst.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said the exact circumstances of the disappearance were being investigated.

It is believed the cadet's parents have flown to the search area.

The mountaineering expedition has been postponed while a search by foot and air is conducted, though the party has remained in France.
