'Phenomenal' speeder jailed
James Green
Green's application for bail pending an appeal was refused
A teenage motorist who drove his father's high-powered car at 116mph in a 40mph zone has been sentenced to three months in a young offenders' institution.

James Green, 18, from Hockley Lane in Netherton, was 76mph over the speed limit when he was caught driving the Volkswagen Golf V6 on a Black Country road last July.

He pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to one count of dangerous driving.

Mr Green immediately lodged an appeal against the sentence at Halesowen Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

'Phenomenal speed'

He was one of 58 motorists caught speeding in Thorns Road, Quarry Bank, near Dudley during a week-long speed trap operation.

Six were recorded travelling at over 80mph and one was doing 96mph. Officers described Green's speed as "phenomenal".

Magistrate Brian Slade told Green: "We think there is no other appropriate way to deal with you because of the very high speed you were driving at, which was 116mph in a 40mph built-up area, which was a high speed - some 76mph above the speed limit.

"The speed at which you were driving presented a serious risk to other road users and pedestrians, and indeed to yourself, by being oblivious to hazards."

An application by the teenager's solicitor for bail pending an appeal against the sentence was refused.
