A teenager accused of burning down a civic statue valued at �500,000 has denied arson. The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with setting fire to the Forward statue, in Centenary Square, Birmingham on 17 April.
The youth, from Bartley Green, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday to deny the charge.
He and three other youths were arrested in Victoria Square shortly after the attack on the fibreglass and steel monument.
His case was adjourned for trial on 10 December and he was remanded on conditional bail.
The statue became a landmark in the city centre after it was put up in 1991 by Birmingham City Council.
It cost �275,000 to construct and depicted famous Brummies, including Joseph Chamberlain and University of Birmingham founder, Josiah Mason.
