Faliraki is popular with young British tourists |
Police on the Greek island of Rhodes are investigating the death of a British tourist who collapsed and died from a suspected drugs overdose while waiting for his flight home. An unnamed friend or relative of the dead man is fighting for his life in hospital after he also collapsed while on holiday at the notorious Faliraki resort on the island.
Russell Anderson, 25, from Birmingham, was partially-clothed when he was discovered in a confused state by a bus driver on the main road from Faliraki to Rhodes Airport on Wednesday.
The father-of-one was taken to the airport where he collapsed and died later in hospital from a suspected heart attack.
'Fast as a horse'
His companion, believed to be a 53-year-old man, is seriously ill in hospital suffering from a suspected blood clot after a similar collapse at the airport.
The Foreign Office confirmed that Russell Christopher Anderson - who had been staying in Faliraki - died after being taken ill at the airport on Wednesday.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "I can confirm that a British national has died in Rhodes, but the cause of death has yet to be established.
"His family are our primary concern.
"They have been informed and we are offering all the assistance that we properly can."
A spokesman for the Birmingham coroner confirmed that Mr Anderson's body had yet to be repatriated.
A Rhodes hospital source said the two Britons were believed to have taken drugs.
The source said: "One was running about as fast as a horse one minute, then collapsed.
Doting father
"Medics brought him round, but when he arrived at hospital, he had two more heart attacks and died."
Mr Anderson's fiance, Hayley Roach, has spoken of her grief at his death.
The 20-year-old, from Northfield, Birmingham, told the city's Evening Mail newspaper that the factory worker had doted on their two-year-old daughter Lauren.
She said: "He was the love of my life - we had been together since I was 15.
"I have been told he died after suffering a heart attack, but it just doesn't make any sense."
Mr Anderson's death comes just weeks after 17-year-old tourist Paddy Doran was stabbed to death in a bar in Faliraki.
Earlier this week one female tourist was arrested for baring her breasts and a number of tour reps were held after police launched a crackdown on lewd behaviour and heavy drinking in the resort.
