Alstom workers travelled to Paris to protest about planned closure |
Talks are being held between Birmingham City Council and the bosses of train maker Alstom to try and save the company's Birmingham factory. The announcement comes just a day after workers travelled to Paris to protest outside the company's AGM.
The French company plans to switch production of London Underground trains to the continent with the loss of more than a thousand jobs.
Birmingham City Council leader, Sir Albert Bore, said the council had been actively supporting the factory for a number of years and was working with the company behind the scenes to see what could be done to keep it going.
More orders
He said the city's Director of Economic Development would be meeting with the Managing Director of Alstom.
Sir Albert added that the council's work would focus on helping them get more orders.
Alstom announced it will stop building trains at the Washwood Heath factory after a contract to make tilting "Pendolino" trains for Virgin ends next July.
Up to 1,400 jobs could be lost as a result.
A group of about 50 workers were in the French capital on Wednesday.
