Mother helps fund life-saving treatment

A young mother has helped to pay for pioneering treatment to remove anti-bodies in her blood so she can have a life-saving kidney transplant.

Michelle Oury, from Southam, in Warwickshire, developed the condition giving birth to her daughter.

Doctors at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry have used an American technique for screening her blood and she is due to have the transplant on Thursday.

Michelle had to pay for part of her treatment but has helped others because the hospital now has permission to treat other patients.

The treatment involves filtering plasma, containing anti-bodies, out of her blood.

At first, Michelle was extremely ill, but the process is working.

"At one point I thought I don't want to do this anymore but my mum kept encouraging me," she said.

"You've just got to keep going."

Michelle has been undergoing kidney dialysis for 12 hours a week for the last seven years.
