Degree honour for Wallace creator

David Sproxton graduated from Durham University in 1976

The co-founder of the animations company behind Wallace and Gromit has been awarded an honorary degree from Durham University.

David Sproxton graduated from the university in 1976 and later co-founded Aardman Animations with Peter Lord.

The partnership went on to create memorable films, including Chicken Run, as well as several award-winning Wallace and Gromit titles.

He was among nine people to be honoured at Durham Cathedral.

'First choice'

Prof Chris Higgins, vice-chancellor of the university, said: "It is a privilege to honour the inspirational dedication and exceptional accomplishments of these individuals linked to Durham University who have provided a national and international benchmark for achievement in their respective fields."

Mr Sproxton said: "Durham was my first choice and I remember signing up to Collingwood College because it was new and co-educational.

"I always knew it was unlikely I would use my (Geography) degree directly in what I did, as I had my eyes firmly fixed on the film and TV business, but there's no doubt that what I learnt has stayed with me."

Other recipients included Durham-based sculptor Fenwick Lawson and chancellor of Glasgow University, Professor Sir Kenneth Calman.

Peter Lord and David Sproxton both become CBEs in 2006.
