More than 400 people have been arrested in just two weeks as part of a police campaign to cut down on drink-related crime on Wearside. Northumbria Police's When to Stop campaign resulted in 419 arrests in Sunderland for violence, disorder and drunken behaviour.
Police are also making visits to licensed premises to make sure they are abiding by the law.
The crackdown is part of Chief Con Mike Craik's pledge of total policing.
Ch Insp Deborah Priest, Sunderland Area Command, said: "We are coming down hard on unruly behaviour in Sunderland.
"We are working closely with our partners and have been pleased by the positive response from licensees and the general public towards this campaign."
