Award for street lighting service
Durham County Council is the most illuminating authority in the country when it comes to street lighting.

The council has won an award for its street lighting service from The Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE).

The 2m a year services is delivered jointly by the authority's Environment and Service Direct departments.

They look after 78,699 lights in the county - more than any other council in the North East.

Cost effective

Durham County Council beat 109 other authorities to win the award, judged on service delivery, maintenance costs, repair-rates and human resources issues, such as staff absenteeism.

A council spokesman said: "This award recognises the excellent service Durham County Council provides in street lighting.

"It is nice for the staff to know that their efforts in ensuring that street lights in the county are not only cost effective, but also well maintained, are second to none."

The Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) formerly the Association of Direct Labour Organisations (ADLO), monitors best practice and value for money efforts within the public sector.
