Fans scramble for concert tickets
Many fans were left disappointed after queuing overnight for free tickets to a music festival on Wearside.

Thousands turned up in Sunderland on Friday and Saturday nights for tickets to the Radio One Big Weekend.

The size of the crowd meant that ticket allocations ran out earlier than expected, and many fans arrived to find there were none left.

Top bands have been lined up for the event at Herrington Country Park, near Penshaw Monument, on 7 and 8 May.

BBC spokesman, Jason Carter said: "We were probably caught by surprise in terms in the scale of the numbers, but our prime objective is to give the first chance of getting tickets to local people - the people in and around the city of Sunderland.

"You can't stop people coming down to try and get hold of the tickets as early as they can. You can only communicate the message that you shouldn't come down too soon, and that it's a long night.

"Having said that, the measures in place to cater for the numbers have worked very well, there's been no trouble at all, and it was very well behaved crowd on both nights."
