Officers stranded in snow rescue
Snow at Slaley, Northumberland
Heavy snow has covered the north-east of England
Three police officers who went to the aid of a heavily pregnant woman trapped in her car in deep snow found themselves stranded in County Durham.

The woman was in the car with her husband and a male friend when it got stuck between Stanhope and Castleside.

The men went for help but failed to return and the woman rang police.

The officers walked two miles in snow up to 4ft deep to find just the tracks of the woman's car and a tractor. The officers were rescued by a passer-by.

The woman, who is eight months pregnant, became concerned after her husband did not return quickly with help and she was becoming cold.

She called police, but since the air ambulance was unable to set off due to the weather, the officers, based in Derwentside, took a vehicle as far as they could then set off on foot.

They trudged through the snow to reach the spot only to find the woman's car had been towed out by a tractor.

The officers headed back to their vehicle, radioing that they were in difficulties, but were then picked up by a passing motorist.
