Three purpose-built sites will be created on the outskirts of the city providing spaces for 1,200 cars.

Travellers will then be bussed into the city from the sites at Belmont, Howlands Farm and Sniperley, according to Durham County Council.

On Monday Durham MP, Gerry Steinberg, will cut the first turf of the project which to be finished at Christmas.

A spokesman for the council said: "The facilities are designed to take pressure off the city's narrow streets by offering safe, reliable and stress-free alternatives to driving in to town.

"Travellers will be able to complete their journey via a new direct bus link."
