| Thousands of people are expected at the first day of the 171st Durham Regatta. The annual rowing competition takes place on the River Wear in Durham City and more than 2,000 rowers are taking part this year. The two-day event is known as the Henley of the North but is older than the southern event. Large crowds are expected on the banks of the river for what has become an established part of the region's sporting and social calendar.
