City remembers footballing legend
Bob Stokoe with the FA cup
Sunderland defeated Leeds in 1973 to lift the FA cup
Sunderland football legend Bob Stokoe was remembered at a service in the city's Minster.

The man who led Sunderland to FA Cup glory in 1973 died in February at the age of 73.

A public memorial service was held on Wednesday, when fans and members of the public are being invited to pay tribute to him.

Members of Mr Stokoe's family were at the service along with members of the 1973 winning side.

Wednesday marked the anniversary of the famous victory 31 years ago when Sunderland beat Leeds.

The FA cup was in the Minster for a time and visitors were being invited to sign a memorial book.

Commentary recreated

The service was opened with the Wembley FA Cup final anthem Abide With Me.

The commentary of the 1973 final was recreated and a member of Mr Stokoe's family told his story.

An appeal has been launched to erect a statue in Mr Stokoe's memory and there will be an update on its progress at the service.

Mr Stokoe went down in footballing history after he led the Sunderland team to the 1973 FA Cup victory.

He made 288 appearances for Newcastle United between 1947 and 1961 and was a member of the side which won the FA Cup in 1955.

He started his management career at Bury when he took over as player manager and it was followed by time at Charlton and Rochdale.

He also managed Carlisle United three times during an 18-year period.
