The growth in student numbers has put pressure on city centre housing |
An MP has claimed the rapid expansion of Durham University has harmed local communities. Gerry Steinberg, MP for Durham city, says that in certain streets local residents now make up just 10% of the population.
He has called on the university authorities to provide more accommodation on campus.
The student population has increased significantly in the city over the past few years.

Durham resident Mike Chadwick, who lives among the student population, said he was concerned about it.
"I am being woken up at two or three in the morning regularly during the week and there are parties that last until 3am.
"You only need one neighbour from hell to make your life hell.

Carol Woods, a Liberal Democrat councillor for Durham, said Mr Steinberg could have acted sooner to stop the growing problem.
She said: "Gerry Steinberg could have done many things including the licensing of houses of multiple occupancy."
