Sunderland upset the odds to lift the FA Cup

Members of Sunderland's victorious 1973 FA Cup winning squad have opened an exhibition dedicated to their triumph 30 years ago.

The Wearsiders overturned the odds, when as a Second Division team, they beat the then mighty Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley.

Now a display of memorabilia from that momentous game has gone on display at the National Glass Centre in the city.

Some of the players from the original squad have also had their feet cast in glass.

Supporters organised the event to mark the occasion when Ian Porterfield's goal created one of the biggest upsets in FA Cup history.

Schoolboy international

Former defender Ritchie Pitt said: "They had a team of internationals, we had none, they had 100s of international caps and we had none.

"I was the only member of our team who had played at Wembley before, and that was in a schoolboy international.

"They were the overwhelming favourites, you could have got odds of 5 to 1 on Sunderland, in what was a two-horse race."

All but one of the victorious squad - goalscorer Ian Porterfield, who is in South Korea where he coaches league side Busan Icons - are still in the UK.

And they got together for a reunion of players at the Stadium of Light at the weekend, in an evening organised by the Sunderland Former Players' Association.

Some of the players are still in the north-east of England but others are now living in other parts of the country.

The game is almost as famous for a match-winning double save by keeper Jim Montgomery, as it is for Porterfield's 31st minute goal.
