Major fireworks display scrapped
2003 New Year's fireworks in Newcastle
The fireworks display was severely disrupted last year
Newcastle's New Year fireworks display is being scrapped.

Council leaders took the decision after last year's main fireworks show was severely disrupted because of high winds and rain.

Now officials are planning a festival of events spread over several weeks instead of concentrating on Christmas and New Year.

Lack of space on the Quayside was also cited as a reason for the change to the celebrations.

The spokesman said: "Newcastle City Council is still considering plans for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

'Prone to disruption'

"However the council has agreed this year there is an opportunity to build on previous success by developing a stronger community focus.

"This year's celebrations will include a winter festival spread over several weeks up to Christmas and New Year, rather than just on one evening.

"Last year's celebrations demonstrated that large scale fireworks displays are prone to disruption by the weather, causing disappointment."

The council says it hopes the new programme will encourage greater community involvement and focus on family entertainment.
