Investigations are under way after around 150 racing pigeons were killed in a fire. Firefighters were called to the allotments at Axwell Park View, Benwell, Newcastle, just after 0400 BST on Sunday. Four pigeon crees on the allotment were destroyed and around 150 birds were killed in the fire. Another 30 were rescued by firefighters. Northumbria Police say they are treating the incident as arson.
