Recycling efforts gain top praise
Council leaders have been praised by a government minister for beating recycling targets.

Environment Minister Elliot Morley congratulated South Tyneside Council on exceeding the target by 40%.

In 2003/4 the authority recycled and composted more than 10,000 tonnes of household waste.

The increase was helped by residents using the Kerb-It and Kerb-It Green recycling schemes and making good use of over 30 recycling centres.

Mr Morley said: "I am very grateful for the substantial commitment you have demonstrated to improving recycling and composting rates, and working for a more sustainable approach to waste management."

Councillor Jim Sewell, lead member for environment at South Tyneside Council, said: "I must say a big thank you to everyone who has supported our recycling schemes.

"We've already topped our target, but we're not resting on our laurels, there's still a lot to do and I'm confident that together we can do it."
