A major competition has been launched to redesign part of one of Tyneside's best-loved areas. The Byker Design Competition has attracted 15 entries from designers in the UK and overseas.
The famous Byker Wall is not involved in the competition, which focuses on St Lawrence Square and South Byker.
The multi-million pound project - aimed at tackling low housing demand - has received funding from the office of the deputy prime minister.
Byker residents are being given the opportunity to comment on entries in an exciting design competition.
Once collated, the comments will be used by a panel of judges to help decide which designs are the best for each area.
The panel, which includes representatives from Newcastle City Council, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and members of the local community, will shortlist up to five designs and the overall winner will be chosen in spring 2005.
