The RSPCA has begun an investigation after a resident living in Ovingham, Prudhoe, found the domestic cat trapped by its paw.

Vet Jim McLellan was forced to amputate its mangled left front leg and called in the RSPCA.

The tortoiseshell cat, thought to be aged between two and five, is recovering well despite her injuries.

RSPCA inspector Damian Woolliscroft said: "We believe this cat had been caught in the trap for around two weeks.

"The amount of pain she suffered does not bear thinking about.

"Her muscles and skin were so badly shredded by the trap's jaws that we had no hope of saving her leg."

Gin traps were made illegal in 1953. They feature strong serrated jaws that clamp together when the trap is sprung.

If caught, the person who laid the trap could face up to six months in jail or a fine of up to �5,000, under the Protection of Animals Act 1911.
