Sacked teacher must wait for ruling
Andrew Bolton
Mr Bolton was sacked in December 2002
A private school teacher who was sacked for having an affair with a pupil has been told he must wait to find out if his claim for wrongful dismissal has been successful.

Andrew Bolton, 35, is also claiming sexual discrimination against Church High School, in Newcastle.

An employment tribunal in Newcastle heard the former head of mathematics at the school was sacked when rumours circulated among the all-girls school's pupils that he was having a relationship with sixth-former Shona Upton.

Mr Bolton said they only started their relationship after Miss Upton left the school and was waiting for her A-level results in August 2002.

Miss Upton, now 19, told the tribunal she moved in with Mr Bolton about a week after starting at Newcastle University in September 2002.

Mr Bolton, of South Gosforth, was sacked in December 2002 and started tribunal proceedings against the school claiming he was sacked due to unfounded rumours.

He also claimed female colleagues were treated differently.

The tribunal heard closing submissions from the claimant and the school on Thursday.

The tribunal chairman said the panel was reserving judgement.
