Drinkers at a Tyneside pub will be stopped from lighting up as it becomes the first in the north east to ban smoking. The Lambton Arms, in Eighton Banks, Gateshead, has had an �80,000 refit and is now reopening as a smoke-free venue.
The pub and restaurant is owned by the Laurel Pub Company which has already tried the idea in Liverpool and Yorkshire.
Lambton Arms managers Sarah Dewdney and Alan Williamson are confident it will catch on.
Ms Dewdney said they took the decision so people have the option to eat and drink in a smoke-free environment.
She said: "We want to give people the opportunity who might not go out and eat, might not have a drink due to asthma or respiratory problems.
"They now have the chance to come to a place and have a meal and have a drink."
