The group won a double rollover jackpot of 3.25m |
A syndicate of shipyard employees, who had only been working together for two weeks, have scooped more than 3m on the National Lottery. The five workers at the Swan Hunter yard in Wallsend, North Tyneside, won a double rollover jackpot of 3.25m.
All five walked out of their jobs just an hour after finding out about the win.
The platers had been working on a troop carrier, but have not been back since the syndicate organiser Peter Gillan told them the good news on Thursday.
He said: "I was on the phone to my mother, checking the score from the Newcastle United match on Ceefax, when I decided to check our numbers.
"When I realised we'd won I just put the phone down and started doing back flips round the living room.
"My wife thought I'd gone barmy because Newcastle had lost but eventually I convinced her and she joined in the back flips."
Jackpot winners
Mr Gillan, who had been unemployed for two years before landing the job working on the Largs Bay vessel, did not have contact telephone numbers for the rest of the syndicate.
He said he had to inform them the next day at the yard when work began at 0700 BST.
The syndicate won with one of five lucky dip tickets bought in Longbenton, North Tyneside.
Lottery organiser Camelot is planning to unveil the rest of the syndicate on Saturday.
Four jackpot winners picked the numbers 8, 18, 19, 29, 44 and 45 in Wednesday's draw.
The yard recently saw the first ship launch in 10 years when the Largs Bay took to the water.
The shipyard has seen a major turn in its fortunes since it went bankrupt in 1992.
