A Royal visit to a jail is due to go ahead as a police investigation continues into an attack on an inmate who had his throat slashed. The Princess Royal is due to visit Acklington prison in Northumberland, as patron of a charity which supports the achievements of prison workers.
A police investigation is continuing at the jail into an incident in which an inmate had his throat cut.
Northumbria Police have confirmed the incident took place in the prison exercise yard on Saturday.
A spokesman said Stephen Copeland, 29 and serving time for theft, needed surgery after the attack.
He said the victim is under 24-hour guard in a secure unit.
The princess is visiting the prison as patron the Butler Trust, a charity set up in 1985.
It recognises the efforts of those who help and support prisoners, including warders, doctors, librarians and volunteers.
