Woman dies after 'walk in snow'

A Tyneside woman who told her family she was going out for a walk has died after being found lying in the snow in an "extremely cold state".

The 42-year-old was discovered near shops at Newbiggin Hall, Newcastle, on Saturday morning.

She was treated at the scene for the effects of cold and taken to Newcastle General Hospital, where she later died.

Police said she left her home at about 1900 GMT on Friday, but was reported missing when she failed to return.

Detectives do not know how long she had been lying in the snow and are now trying to piece together her movements.

Anyone who saw the woman out walking between Friday evening and 1100 GMT on Saturday is urged to contact the Northumbria force.
