Extra trains for Great North Run

Extra public transport is being laid on to cope with the thousands of runners and spectators expected at the Great North Run next month.

Metro operator Nexus will be running extra trains between Newcastle and South Shields, which is the closest station to the half-marathon finish.

Both Shields ferries will be operating in tandem until 1800 BST.

Shuttle buses will connect the finish with the ferry landing, nearby Metro stations and Newcastle.

Passengers are being advised they will not be able to board trains at Haymarket Metro station until after the race because of ongoing development work.

Up to 54,000 people have registered for the 13.1 mile (21 km) run, which is set to take place on 20 September.
