A rundown cricket pavilion in Newcastle is to be transformed into an £880,000 children's centre, creating about 80 local construction jobs. Plans to demolish The Pavilion in Brunswick and replace it with modern facilities have been approved by Newcastle City Council. Work is expected to begin on the Sure Start Children's Centre in June, said the local authority. The Sure Start scheme offers support to families with children under five. Council executive member Anita Lower said: "This project is a real partnership of funders and will lead to a real partnership of services for family, sporting groups and the wider community available under one roof." The centre will be funded with £330,000 from Sure Start and a corporate capital grant of £210,000 from the council. Contributions from other sources including Your Homes Newcastle and the local parish council are currently being discussed.
