Gas-loss homes lose electricity

Hundreds of homes in Northumberland left without gas for two days have been hit by a power cut.

Northern Gas Networks blamed floodwater getting into the mains for cutting off gas to homes in Rothbury on Monday.

Around 1,000 plug-in heaters were given to affected households, but electricity supplies also went off leaving 2,300 homes affected, CE Electric confirmed.

Electricity was restored to most homes by Tuesday evening, but 175 are still without power.

It is hoped that gas supplies will be restored by Wednesday morning.

A spokesman for Northern Gas Networks said: "Our engineers will continue this work late into the night.

"But there will come a time when it is better to stand-down for the night and return in the morning."

A welfare centre remains open at Dr Thomlinson Middle School in Silverton Road where people can go to get warm and receive hot refreshments.
