Police sealed off the area where the girl died

A teenage girl has been hit and killed by a marked police car in the West End of Newcastle.

The car was being driven along Denton Road late on Monday night, when it struck the unnamed 16-year-old.

Northumbria Police appealed for calm after a 23-year-old local man was arrested for a public order offence following the incident.

The force said it was assisting an inquiry by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Assistant chief constable Sue Sim said: "This is a tragedy.

"We would appeal for people in the area to remain calm while an investigation is carried out.

"We are cooperating fully with the IPCC investigation."
