Samantha Madgin gave birth to a son last May |
A young mother was stabbed 10 times including a fatal wound to her heart as she tried to break up an argument, a court has heard. Samantha Madgin, 18, was stabbed a mile from her home in an alley in Wallsend, North Tyneside, in August last year.
A 15-year-old girl, who cannot be named, had taken cocaine and been drinking before killing the mother, Newcastle Crown Court heard.
She denies murder and affray but has admitted manslaughter.
Miss Madgin, who gave birth to her son Callum last May, died from multiple stab wounds.
Alistair MacDonald, prosecuting, said she suffered 10 stab wounds - one to her face, six to her arms and three to her chest.
'Kitchen knife'
He told the jury the 15-year-old had been drinking and taking cocaine before the attack, which happened after an argument between her friends and two men.
He said that Miss Madgin was trying to stop the argument and was heard to shout "come away".
The men went into one of the houses in the street and then re-emerged, followed closely by the 15-year-old, who was walking purposefully and carrying a serrated kitchen knife, the court heard on Wednesday.
Mr MacDonald added: "It is the prosecution case that this was a sustained and determined attack by the person who wielded the knife.
"She struggled with her attacker as she moved down the road to the place where her body lay.
"The person who killed her was (the defendant). There is no dispute; she has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
"The sole issue for you to decide is whether she committed murder or manslaughter.
"Anybody who has a weapon of that sort with them in a public place, who inflicts that number of injuries on a person, intends to cause, at the very least, really serious harm."
Four men have admitted affray charges and a woman has admitted assisting an offender in relation to the case. They will be sentenced at a later date.
The trial continues.
