A 13-year-old girl who was riding the animal at the time, escaped serious injury, but was treated for shock.

Police are searching for the owner of the dogs, which fled the scene of the attack at Cocklawburn beach, Berwick, on Saturday afternoon.

A Northumbria force spokesman said the pony also lost part of its tail in the incident and was being treated by vets.
