M-way shut as bridge is installed
A stretch of motorway on Tyneside has been closed over the bank holiday weekend to allow a new pedestrian and cycle bridge to be lifted into place.

The Newcastle Central Motorway will be closed until Tuesday morning to allow the Northumbria University structure to be lifted into place by cranes.

It is shut between the New Bridge Street roundabout and Jesmond Road.

Motorists have been warned to avoid the area and diversions and signposts have been put in place.

The northbound diversion takes motorists from the motorway along to New Bridge Street to Clarence Street Stoddart Street, Portland Road, Sandyford Road, Osborne Terrace and Jesmond Road before rejoining the motorway.

Southbound traffic is diverted from the motorway to Jesmond Road, Portland Terrace, Portland Road, Stoddart Street, Clarence Street and New Bridge Street before rejoining the motorway.
