Prisoners launch roof-top protest
Prison negotiators were called in to deal with a roof-top protest at a Northumberland jail.

Two prisoners climbed on to the roof of the Category C Acklington jail on Wednesday morning.

A Home Office spokeswoman said trained negotiators were called to deal with the situation at the 900-inmate jail.

The spokeswoman said the prisoners returned to their cells after spending about five hours on the roof. She said there were no injuries or damage.

Regime unaffected

Acklington holds almost 900 male prisoners and is on the site of a former RAF station.

The spokeswoman said: "There was an incident at HMP Acklington which started at about 0940 BST on Wednesday.

"The prison regime was unaffected by the incident."

She would not reveals the reason for the protest.

The last major disturbance at the prison occurred in November 2004, when three inmates caused extensive damage in a protest.
