Pop stars the Pet Shop Boys are to stage a concert against the backdrop of a famous Tyneside shipyard. They will perform their new soundtrack to a screening of acclaimed 1925 film Battleship Potemkin at the Swan Hunter yard, in Wallsend, North Tyneside.
The performance on 1 May will be alongside the Northern Sinfonia and is part of NewcastleGateshead's 2006 cultural programme.
Tickets for the 14,000-capacity event are free.
Sergei Eisenstein's influential silent film Battleship Potemkin, tells of a revolt by sailors during the Russian Revolution in 1905.
Industrial setting
The Pet Shop Boys, made up of Tyneside-born Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, have written a new soundtrack for the film.
They have had a string of hits including West End Girls and It's A Sin.
NewcastleGateshead chief executive Andrew Dixon said: "This event promises to be an amazing and unforgettable audience experience set against the striking backdrop of one of the region's most historic and iconic symbols of its industrial roots.
"To use Swan Hunters as a stage set for one of the most exciting and innovative musical events of 2006 is very fitting."

The Sage Gateshead performance director Simon Clugston said: "To hear Northern Sinfonia perform the soundtrack to the classic film Battleship Potemkin with the Pet Shop Boys in the apt industrial setting of Swan Hunter's shipyard will be a night to remember."
