60m revamp for city high rises
High rise blocks, which have made their mark on Newcastle's skyline since the 1960s, are to get a 60m revamp.

More than 50 multi-story blocks across the city are due to benefit from improvements over the next five years.

Work has already started on the first phase of the plan, which involves the modernisation of 112 flats in a 15-storey block.

In addition to internal improvements the blocks will benefit from roof improvements, new windows and doors.

Different challenges

John Lee, chief executive of Your Homes Newcastle, which manages the city's 32,000 housing stock, said: "This is a massive part of our investment programme and very significant for Newcastle as these high rise blocks are a marker to the housing trends of the 1960s.

"With 52 blocks, ranging from six to 28 storeys high, they have presented some very different challenges.

"For example normal scaffolding is not appropriate so they have to use 'climbers' and some services, including electrical and waste disposal are provided en masse.

"We are working closely with contractors and tenants to address concerns and minimise the disruption caused.

"I am confident that the end result will be high rise living equipped for the 21st Century."
