INEX researchers created a tiny replica of the Tyne Bridge |
An explosion in tiny hi-tech devices has led to the expansion of a Tyneside research project into nanotechnology. More jobs are being created at the Newcastle University's rapidly expanding INEX facility.
The multi-million pound complex has already achieved success in creating minute replicas of some of Tyneside's landmarks such as the Tyne Bridge.
Nanotechnology involves single atoms and molecules, with one nanometre measuring a billionth of a metre.
INEX says it creating 13 new jobs, which will be part-funded by the Department of Trade & Industry.
Government confidence
The news is a further boost to the area's "Science City" status bestowed on it by Chancellor Gordon Brown late last year.
Professor Ken Snowdon, director of INEX, said: "This expansion is in response to the explosive demand for micro-device prototyping services across all sectors of UK technology-based industry.
"It underscores the confidence which the government has shown in the North of England and Newcastle in particular.
"These are highly skilled posts which themselves will lead to the attraction of further job opportunities for the regional economy."
