Tyneside could benefit from a �3m boost when an annual teachers conference is held in the region, according to a regeneration partnership. The Newcastle Gateshead Initiative (NGI) says the National Union of Teachers conference could generate more money than anticipated.
It is being held at the Sage Gateshead on Saturday and Sunday, and is expected to attract more than 1,500 people.
The figure is an increase of �1m on the NGI's original estimate.
Ian Taylor, commercial director of the NGI, said: "This is confirmation of Newcastle Gateshead's growing reputation as a centre of excellence for hosting high profile events in the field of education.
"A conference like the NUT's is bound to help put the spotlight back on Newcastle Gateshead following the profile-raising Labour Party Spring Conference in February."
According to the NGI, Tyneside's conference business is currently worth over �72m, which could increase to �100m by the end of 2005.
