| Firefighters called to an animal shelter fire on Tyneside rescued 21 dogs and one puppy. The fire broke out at the cat and dog shelter on Benton Lane in Longbenton in the early hours of Sunday morning. Officers say none of the animals were injured, but substantial damage was caused to the ground floor of the two-storey building. The second floor also suffered damage in the fire, which firefighters quickly brought under control.
