An internationally acclaimed artist is making his second mark on the Tyneside landscape by creating a 39ft high steel and glass sculpture.

Last year American sculptor Danny Lane unveiled his 295ft-long work 'Opening Line' at Gateshead bus station.

Now work is under way on his latest piece, Ellipsis Eclipses, which will stand outside The Gate in Newcastle.

The sculpture consists of 1,100 pieces and its design will be kept under wraps until it is unveiled on Tuesday.

The design includes 12mm thick glass plates, weighing 10,000 kilograms, which will be lifted into place by crane on Sunday.

Ellipsis Eclipses is part of the city's Grainger Town Partnership 'Art in the Heart' project to encourage private developers to commission art.

'Landmark for people'

Councillor David Faulkner, of Culture, Heritage and Sport at Newcastle Council, said: "Ellipsis Eclipses is a landmark piece for Newcastle.

"It is one of the final pieces in a collection of 18 art works and a spectacular conclusion to the Grainger Town public art programme."

The city council, One NorthEast and Arts Council North-East were all involved in the project.

Phil Steele, acting manager of The Gate, owned by Land Securities, said: "At the outset we wanted to help to create a piece of public art that would both complement the design of The Gate and also be a landmark for people in the city.

"I believe our goal to bring an iconic piece of public art to this quarter of the city has been achieved."
