Vandals are causing thousands of pounds worth of damage
Passengers on the Tyne and Wear Metro system are being asked to help in a major crackdown on graffiti and litter.

The campaign is targeting the system in the South Tyneside area which is particularly blighted by vandals.

South Tyneside Council and Metro operator Nexus have joined forces to tackle the problem as part of the "Do Your Bit" campaign.

Over the last year Nexus has removed 500 sq m of graffiti in the area at a cost of 39,000.

It has also invested 8.5m in a CCTV system to monitor all Metro stations in a bid to cut crime.

A spokesman said: "Metro users can help by reporting all incidents of environmental crime to crack the problem."
