Sir Bobby Robson's distinguished career spans 55 years

He will receive the honorary title from the Lord Mayor of Newcastle at a ceremony on 2 March.

The 71-year-old, who was born in County Durham, was capped 20 times by England before becoming Newcastle boss in 1999.

His name will be engraved on the wall of the Banqueting Hall, joining that of other Toon greats such as Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn.

Councillor George Douglas, the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, said: "Sir Bobby Robson has been a wonderful ambassador for Newcastle over the years.

"His successes throughout his career have established him as one of the greatest managers of all time.

"It is only right that we should honour him, not only for his football but also for being a role model for young people throughout the world."
