The project is due to open in 2006 |
A ceremony to mark the start of work on a major project to celebrate part of Northumberland's colliery heritage was held on Monday. A turf-cutting ceremony at the site of Woodhorn Colliery Museum marks the formal start of construction of the 16m scheme.
Over the next two years the site will be transformed into an innovative visitor attraction.
The project has been awarded 10m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The scheme is also being supported by the Northumberland Strategic Partnership, One NorthEast Single Regeneration Budget, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and the Northern Rock Foundation.
Once it is complete, it will feature interactive displays and archive research facilities, housed in a distinctive new building.
Old colliery buildings will also be refurbished and opened to visitors for the first time.
Up to 100 jobs will be created over the construction period and the opening of the new facilities in 2006.
