A card offers students tips on avoiding crime
The work of a former Viz comic artist is featured in a crime prevention campaign targeting Tyneside students.

Steve Donald has designed a Christmas card which will be sent out to students in Newcastle giving practical advice on avoiding burglaries.

The campaign by the Student Safety Partnership is timed to coincide with a peak time for burglaries and break-ins.

It serves as a reminder to students not to leave their valuables unattended over Christmas.

Alan Brown, director of crime reduction for the North East, said: "Students should be aware that they are especially vulnerable to burglars, but a few simple precautions are often all that's needed to discourage thieves.

"Whether you're leaving your home for a few hours or a few weeks, its worth taking measures like setting light timers, hiding valuables and making sure doors and window are extra secure.
