Graphic design students at Newcastle College designed posters in an effort to combat car crime and walk-in thefts.

The move was prompted by Northumbria Police, which has identified an ongoing problem at the college's Ryehill campus.

The posters will be displayed in and around the college grounds and buildings.

The college is within the Newcastle New Deal for Communities area and members of the New Deal police team already enjoy a good working relationship with college security staff.

Although this has reduced crime it was decided to involve the students through a crime prevention poster competition.

'Reduce crime'

It was won by Claire Corley who received �100 worth of art vouchers.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: "This project aims to help reduce crime in and around Newcastle College, by making people more aware of how they could become victims of crime.

"By involving the community and working in partnerships like this, police can get the message across more effectively."

Elaine Boyes of Newcastle New Deal for Communities, added: "This is the latest in a string of measures tackling crime in the West End.

"Initiatives like the New Deal police team and neighbourhood wardens have already helped to reduce the crime rate by 14% since New Deal started its work in 2000."
